Japan has no 2G (GSM) network anymore. 3G is still available, but the standard is now 4G (LTE - WiMAX) and 5G.

Most 3G/4G/5G-handsets work in Japan on condition that your provider has a roaming agreement with Japan. It is best to make sure in advance what the extra costs will be for data roaming.
The LTE bands that are used by the Japanese providers are not 100% equal to the ones used in Europe, by mostly it works.

I personally tested it with a Belgian Samsumg A23 5G. It worked in 99% of the locations I tried.

If you are concerned about roaming costs, it might be worth renting a "mobile wifi router" when you arrive at the airport in Japan. For a cost of about 1,500 JPY/day you will get a box that acts as a portable WiFi Hotspot, giving you unlimited data access to the internet (at LTE speeds). For making calls you could install Skype, Facebook essenger MS Teams etc. on your mobile phone and use a service like SkypeOut to dial landlines and mobile phones.
If you expect to need to make several domestic calls, you could rent a smartphone for about 1,500 JPY/day and use it both as telephone (NOT your own phone number) and as portable Wifi Hotspot.
